Definitely. My RA's were incredibly strict and if they smelled anything they got to the bottom of it quickly. I got written up a lot >_<
You're free to go knock on the person's door yourself, of course.

The most antisocial dorms are probably the "safest" IMO, there's a HUGE difference in the socialness between people in an apartment style dorm and in traditional style. There's some threads about that in college condidential. Also eplorations floors are a total hit or miss, when I was a freshman the only reason why I joined a floor was to get into U-hall (so doing explorations is the safest way to cheat your way into the dorm you want) and the RA never cared if I participated in events anywayz. Sweet deal. Sadly U-hall isn't a freshman dorm... is third north the only apartment style left? That's gunna be in high demand. Oh yeah, there's the one Angeli lives in that's brand spanking new. I'd live there. If you go Soph you're welcome in Genshiken. Also substance floors always make me giggle because the college is willing to admit the very illegal fact that students do substances in their dorms.. ohho. Anyway I've heard college horror stories but they're greatly exaggerated, the ratio of partiers to normal people isn't bad at all, and if you really hate your roommate you can always apply for a room change. There might be some groups on FB of new freshman people with certain "restrictions" looking for a roomate. Otherwise your selection is completely random no matter where you dorm so no use worrying! (Don't worry, a majority of people i've met in nyu are nice) PS - Swamped with work, haven't slept in two days, if not in this clubs meeting will be at next weeks ilu you all miss you! excuse the bad grammar, it shut down last night also this nyuhousing.wikispaces.com/

Mm, I'm gonna throw in my vote for Rubin. No real reason, I just had such a great time there, and compared to the other freshman dorms (at least, from what I saw when I checked them out), Rubin's by far the most social. Our door was pretty much always open and people would just filter in and out of each other's rooms, watch movies, play x-box (our entire floor had an aggressive love affair with halo, and on the weekends we'd actually connect our x-boxes via those old school cables and do massive halo 2 matches, which was SO fun.) I know sometimes people don't like that, cause they'd rather be left alone, but honestly you want a fun dorm your freshman year, cause it's the best way to make friends right out of the gate.
As far as drugs, I wouldn't worry. When I first came to college I was like "I'm never going to touch drugs!" I was pretty adamant about it, but I became such good friends with people that just happened to love getting high, and it wasn't a factor in our friendship at all. Heck, my first girlfriend in college was a massive stoner, and even that didn't really bother me after the initial "OH MAH GAWDS U SMOKE MARIJUANA?!?!?!"
I'm not gonna lie to you, I did eventually get into it, but that was totally my own decision, and not because a bunch of drug-crazed teens were sticking blunts in my mouth and saying "Come on man, everyone's doing it. Aren't you COOL!!!!!" If you really have a problem with someone pressuring you, go to the RA and they'll take care of it right away. RA's will usually look the other way if they see kids that are clearly drunk/high, but if someone's complaining about it they intercede immediately.
Uhhh, so I guess the tl;dr version of this is
- Rubin is awesome, you'll definitely have a blast there. - Don't let a concern about the presence of drugs alter your decision to dorm/not dorm in a certain place.
Oh, also (because I wish someone had told me this when I first moved in freshman year):
You should talk to your roommates and coordinate who's bringing what. We didn't do this, so we ended up with two T.V.s (which actually ended up working cause of halo), no microwave, no fridge, and 50 million wall fans. Also make sure your headphones are always plugged in - one time I opened up a ytmnd of "monorail cat has left the station" and left it up for a good 30 minutes while I played WoW, until my roommate was like "PAUL SHUT THAT $#@% OFF FOR $#@%'S SAKE!!!!!". I had my headphones in my ears, but the jack wasn't plugged in. That was so awkward.

Don't mean to be OT BUUUUUUUUUUT
8U This is the most open discussion of anything of this sort, ever. You guys should be the actual tour group people. >:U
---
Getting this back on track. Uhhhh. I believe everyone has pretty much covered everything. :U I will say that Founders, the super brand new one, doesn't have the same kind of community as the other frosh dorms. I don't know why, maybe everyone is off in like Rubin or Third North partying it down - but as far as drinking or drugs...
Have yet to walk onto a floor that smells like weed. One girl got taken away by an ambulance that I know of - but she was drinking outside of the place. xD Like I said, hardly a community feeling and it may just be because of my class or maybe it has something to do with the rooms, the larger halls, the separation? As someone once said "I never knew you lived on our floor" to me once while riding the elevator xD
>8U I mean, what is it that makes dorms like Rubin so close?

@lady Earlgray
My mom is concerned about the distance between Founder's and the NYU campus- she doesn't want me walking that far because she worries about my safety. How much of a hassle is it to walk 10-15 minutes to campus and how safe is it? I'm sort of weighing my options here since I've more or less gotten a "no" to that one as well.

As long as you're not walking around by yourself at 3 am, you're fine - going to and from class, nothing's gonna happen to you whatsoever. As far as the walk, I'm sure they have a bus set up, considering Alumni's in that same 10-15 minute walking range, and it has a bus set up too. Personally I enjoy the walks, but most people don't, so I guess you should check and make sure there's a bus on that route (which there almost definitely is). But yeah, it's 100% safe, for sure.

xD Definitely 100% safe, and this is coming from someone who's traversed around campus at odd hours at night.
Actually, aren't we in a generally "good" area of NYC? xU Also do not worry about the walk, actually I rather like not being directly "on" campus, it feels as if you're actually going "home" in the afternoon and away from any school nonsense. Also, sorry guys but Washington Square park is sketchier at night :U Where Founders, Third North, Palladium, and Alumni is -- it's pretty nice in comparison, I'd say.

Uhh I think Founders is the new dorm so stop me if I'm wrong but lol I live on 26th Street and let me tell you, the walk to campus might be annoying, but it's pretty safe. Even at 2-3 AM, it isn't so unsafe-- but you can always call an NYU safety van after the buses stop running. Or walk home with a friend =)

Yeah, believe it or not we're in a pretty good part of New York, the only dangerous thing in the east village are the rampant hipsters and the occasional pushy environmentalist/signature gatherer. I'm not sure how far away founders is, but the freshman dorms are all within comfortable walking distance, they don't make you go too far until you're an upperclassman.

Aggressive signer-people are the worst, when you see them put something in your hand and walk fast or you can do what I did one day and be all: "I AM LATE TO CLASS OKAY BYE"

Aggressive signer-people are the worst, when you see them put something in your hand and walk fast or you can do what I did one day and be all: "I AM LATE TO CLASS OKAY BYE"Haha, freshman year I used to just whip out my phone and pretend I was talking, they usually forget you exist as soon as that happens. Nowadays I kind of enjoy it, though. "Sir, do you want to help us save the environment?" "Naw, I'd rather kill it." Fun times. You do have to be careful - one time I was around time square with some of my brosephinos, and a dude starts trying to hit us up to try his new rap cd (you know, same old speech where they just want you to take the CD and try it so it'll give them exposure, and you're like "oh, this dude's pretty up on his grassroots marketing! I'll support that", and then as soon as you grab the CD "Alright thanks brotha, that'll be 20 bucks.") Anyway, instead of just ignoring it, my cousin takes a look at the CD and says "naw, I already heard this, shit sucks." Gaaaaaaawd. It's a good thing my cousin's a 6'6'', 300 pound Italian, or else he would've been torn apart. Moral of the story is pretty obvious, I think. XD

I think NYC is actually the safest large town in the US. Everyone also walks instead of driving here. So you might find yourself walking a mile or so a day but that's very normal. I think the average New Yorker walks something like 2 or 3 miles. If you're from a town where everyone drives (like me) you might even find that your legs are sore on the first or second day! Also I agree that NYU campus is perfectly safe, also Union Square area (and most other places in Manhattan). There's ALWAYS going to be someone on the street, no matter what time it is. (except maybe 5-6 AMish). People here are also pretty nice, so if you were in trouble, don't worry, they'd help out! (But there's a low chance of anything happening to you) You get used to the walking very fast though. So pretty soon it doesn't matter if you live in the Union Square/Founders area. The people I am sorry for are the ones who live all the way in 20th+ street though! But then again people from New Jersey and other boroughs commute every day, so when you look at 12th street it isn't far at all. About 4-5 blocks? I find it nicely convenient, since there is a major subway station right here (Union Square), and if you're the sort of person who likes adventures, you can conveniently go to almost anywhere in NY. (Or if you just need to go to like, 100th street or something for another reason) Oh yeah, don't worry about drugs, no one's gunna try to make you do any. I am pretty sure that Angeli and Sara have managed to stay completely alcohol free this year (at least at our parties) for example. XD I agree with Paul about coordinating with roomies. And yeah, since Angeli lives in an apartment style dorm the sense of not knowing anyone is pretty typical. That's what I mean when I called apartment style dorms antisocial. For me it's a positive because I like my privacy, kitchen, and living room. But yeah, depending on Apartment or Traditional style, it's a very different experience. @paul: I heard that Hayden is the most social dorm, so I guess it varies by year? Vote U-hall for most antisocial dorm woooo!!! (Or maybe Alumni since they're all singles? XD) Oh and I heard and FML of the headphones thing - ONLY IT WAS PORN! LOL!

Nora is right, I stayed away from alcohol this whole year and it was no big deal. People made a bigger deal about my Mac than my choice not to drink (fyi, I choose not to drink because of the taste and often the crazy things that can happen because of it). Also, Nora, Angeli doesn't live in the apartment style; only Third North is apartment style. And its not true about the antisocialness either. I know everyone on my floor and we're all friendly to each other. It really just depends on who you are and who the other people on your floor are. You can be as social or antisocial as you want.

Actually, I just found out that I actually know two people who go to Goddard. Here's what I know and how I would describe them.
1) Goody-goody two shoes chinese girl who's always good in class and whatnot. She's a cool person, but I have never even heard the slightest hint she drinks or does alcohol. She seems to "good" to be doing that kind of thing.
2) Incidentally, another chinese girl. This one, is really soft-spoken, the kind of person you would think is innocent of whatever someone else accuses her off. This one, I know, has no experience at all with alcohol or any sort of drug. Therefore, this really leads me to believe that Goddard is a goody-goody hall.
Make what you will of that.

I mean, it's definitely tough to gauge what kind of a dorm it is based on two people's personalities/preferred social settings. Both of my roommates in alumni are uber outgoing stoners, but it doesn't mean alumni is the "weed" dorm... it just means our room smells dank. In fact, on the whole Alumni's actually ~really~ anti-social, just cause people can lock their doors and not have to deal with anything, so they usually do (and that insane level of privacy is usually why people pick Alumni, myself included).
Honestly, most of the quiet kids on my floor who keep to themselves don't know about how often kids take a blunt to the face in my room. In the same vein, I'd bet that if there was some crazy stuff going on in Goddard, like a floor party every weekend, your two friends probably wouldn't know about it. That said, maybe it means Goddard is a good place to dorm if you don't wanna deal with stuff like that, cause it can go on all around you and you'll have no idea, haha.
