Aww I looked at the Third North description and it looks nice, but my parents told me it's too much money. =(
So which is better in terms of size/ cleanliness- Weinstein, Hayden, or Founders? Those look like my top choices at this point.
Also- and this is kind of a weird question I know, but erm... how much sketchy stuff goes on in the various dorms? I'm really afraid of drugs and stuff like that, and I don't want to wind up with a roommate who does that stuff. I know it's not really in my control but I worry. So as far as you guys know, which is the "safest" dorm in that regard?

Weinstein tends to be the cleanest of the dorms, and Founders has the biggest rooms. My advice is to go for Weinstein, as it will encompass all what you need. Also, if you don't wanna dorm on a floor that might be sketchy, you can always choose to live on substance free floor where all of the drugs and alcohol is prohibited, and they function just like normal floor otherwise. I have to admit, depending on who lives on your floor/in your room, you might get unlucky. My floor constantly smells like weed...not fun. Also, if you're worried about price, there's alway low-cost housing options you can explore and sign up for.

One thing my mom was concerned about- does wanting to be on a substance free floor necessarily mean I'll end up with a bunch of religious loonies, or are there lots of other kids like me who are normal but just don't like all the yucky stuff?
After looking at some pictures, Founders looks the nicest in terms of rooms. I still have some time to decide, but that one is at the top of my list right now. Weinstein comes second because of the food halls hehe.

xD Only religious loonies you'll encounter is if your roommate is one.
Generally, though, substance free is just that -- normal kids who don't like yucky stuff.
I currently live in Founders. And it is the nicest in terms of rooms =3 *WAVES ALL THIS EMPTY SPACE AT YOU, SARA, HAHAHHAHA* I have yet to encounter any real substance problem, there hasn't been a floor (Yet) that smells like weed. If you're wondering about food, though, that's what you have legs for ;3 Third North dining hall is just down the street and then there's Paladium (Palladium?) a block or so over.
So really? You don't miss out on having no dining hall, plus you got all of this nice space xD

In terms of "safest" dorm as you say, I'd have to place my bets on Hayden. Because that's the only dorm that I know of those three that have not had ambulances come to get those kids who get alcohol poisoning. I've seen people taken out of rubin, 3rd north, and weinstein. I've heard stories about all the others, except Goddard and Hayden. But I know the least about those two, so I can't really give you an answer here. I know of only one person in Hayden and none in Goddard. Hayden has a lot of jewish people from what the person I know (who's jewish, she said it) said. Make use of what I know to whatever means you want.
Refer to my previous post here. Founders rooms really are no different. They just have the nice hallways and such.
And just saying, I loved my time here at Rubin. Its been awesome, met some of the coolest people I know here. Sure, I know of a lot of sketchy stuff going on here, but you really can just avoid it if you want.
Quick note, just found out one of my roommates has friends in Goddard. Says you gotta do some community service to be there. From that, I'd say they'd be goody-goody people. Sketchy people tend to not want to do nice stuff community service.

there aren't many religious loonies or super lame people at NYU except for the korean christians and the young republicans on campus. I'd actually recommend against a substance free floor, though, cause you never know, you might get stuck with supreme lamers. Then again, you could have my experience and end up with three roommates all pushing weed and one who could take the biggest bong hits you've ever seen, so....
don't go substance-free, just have a good time. Drugs are something you'll have to experience, and god knows college is the time to experience them.

Make use of what I know to whatever means you want. Actually, last year, there was an article in the Washington Square News(NYU student run newspaper) about a "drug ring" being found at Hayden. The article mentioned things about students meeting together to smoke copious amounts of weed and have orgies. Of course they exaggerated like crazy. WSN is a horribly biased paper, especially for something student run. Here's an article from the NYPost. And a follow up article from an NYU source. I would expect more jewish people to be at weinstein >.> don't go substance-free, just have a good time. Drugs are something you'll have to experience, and god knows college is the time to experience them. .............I know what you mean Mike but........WTF!?!? Anyway Rachel, I totally see what your concerned about. Last year, my floor reeked of weed every single day. Like c'mon! How do you guys even have the money to smoke that much!? I really hate the smell myself. I also don't drink either.... >.>

Weinstein comes second because of the food halls hehe. OK let me give you some information to guide your enjoyment level. Do NOT join a substance free floor, I was briefly on one and yes it's full of religious loonies and/or people with no experience sharing space. There are plenty of nice people too, but generally speaking if you want to get in touch with the real, ecclectic NYU (and I don't mean based on substance use), don't do substance-free. Hayden has been for pot smokers since I was a freshman, I don't think it's changed. U-Hall is home to many lulzy ghetto drinking parties, but a nice gym and cafeteria that you don't have to go outside for. Weinstein was where I lived, great because you have a cafeteria downstairs and a good sense of community with the floor. Not much substance use, but it's there. Going down for a 12 AM study break at quiznos with friends is basically the bees knees. Rubin is also good for community, though there's more substance use. The food there sucks, do yourself a favor and avoid a meal plan if you can. Third North I can't speak for, though most people I talk to have enjoyed it. Brittany has nice rooms. Anywhere not on this list is a complete shithole for freshmen.

This thread got pretty strange. Let's try not to encourage drug use.
So Rachel, you are going to have some kind of encounter with drugs, whether it's getting a whiff of weed from some random person on the street or being approached by a drug dealer or actually trying it out. This is college (in New York City no less) and it's inevitable. That said, it is also very easy to avoid drugs. Just say no if offered, and if a friend is smoking weed, either leave the room until s/he finishes or find new friends. Although I have to say, you'll be hard pressed to find a group of friends that all avoid drugs in any way or form. If someone tries to force it on you, then you're in the wrong crowd and getting high is the least of your worries. I hope we're not giving you a bad impression or turning you off from coming to NYU, but you're going to learn all this whatever college you go to. The Ivy League is not exempt from this; they aren't idyllic places where everyone is an angel, as my dad likes to believe.
So don't worry so much about substance abuse; it's a part of college life and we all have to deal with it. On that thought, I don't think it's necessary to live on a substance free floor unless you want to be absolutely sure your floor hallway doesn't smell like weed.

Yeah, I know this stuff goes on everywhere- I have a friend who goes to UMass Amherst and she knows tons of people that smoke pot. When I talk about these worries to my parents they just tell me that at the nicer schools the only difference is kids get more expensive drugs. >__>
Luckily I've managed to stay away from all of this stuff in high school, but living among people who smoke pot is going to be hard for me. I guess regardless of which dorm I pick, I'll pray that my roommate doesn't smoke and that will have to be the end of it. Besides all my fears I'm terribly allergic to smoke of any kind. -__-

Yeah, I just heard myself from one of one of my friends who knows someone who lives in weinstein about a "substance-free" floor. Had a talk with my friends friend, and I heard some interesting things.
1. Those floors contain two kinds of people. The self-righteous crazy fundamentalists, and the people who were forced into it by their parents. He was the later. The later consists, he says, about 10%. Not sure how accurate this is.
2. There will, at some point, inevitably be strife between these two groups. Of the forced people, someone is bound to come back reeking of weed or drunk. Then the crazy get on their case, and raging ensures. This happened once, from what he said, when some guy came back reeking of weed. A lot of fighting, and that guy had to sign some form that if he ever came back reeking of weed, he would have to be removed from the floor. Yeah.........
So, I'd say do not go to these floors, unless you happen to be one of the crazy people, but I don't believe you are.
After another look, in terms of avoiding these things, I'd have to reccommend Goddard. They're the dorm that has to do some community service work. From that and no ambulances or crazy drug stories, I'd say it contains the least amount of drugs. However, once again, everyone says people who live there are crazy. I dunno what to say about that.
One of my roommates loves to smoke, and is a bit of an asshole. However, he does show me enough respect to not smoke in the room when I ask. However, when he comes back reeking of weed, there really is nothing that can be done. Remember, I live in Rubin, the sketchiest of the freshman dorms, or at least I believe so. Ultimately, its not too hard avoiding drugs. Unless you're deathly allergic and will nearly die from a whiff of weed smoke, just about anywhere is really fine.

Jack's post contains 100% truth, especially about the floors. If you parents are pushing you into it, don't let them. You will probably be screwed. Not to scare you about ZOMG drugs, it's just the reality that they get around in college. Your roomate being a jerk/being awesome is totally random no matter where you are. I don't know much about Goddard to tell you. Maybe we should write up a thread where we all talk about our experiences dorming for our freshmen?

To be honest, my parents actually discouraged me from rooming on a substance free floor because they think I need to grow up and basically suck it up because there are people that do drugs and that's life. They know I'll never do drugs, and they don't want me to have a crazy roommate.
To be honest, I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of crazy religious people either. I'm crazy, but a different kind of crazy. xD I'm anime crazy, which is like in its own category... ^^;
I'll be browsing the internetz for stories for the next month so I can make sure I pick the dorm that I'd be most comfortable in. I probably won't do substance free housing, but I'd like to believe that there have got to be some floors that don't smell like pot...right?
