I know- please don't be mad. ;-; There's a very small chance it will happen, I just thought I should tell people now rather than later in case it's what I decide. Again, it's very unlikely. *hides in a box* The reason I'm connecting with people here is because I'll most likely be going to NYU. :3 I've decided with my family that I won't wait for the Brown waitlist any later than the end of May. That's when we've got to send NYU the housing deposit anyway.
Speaking of which, when I get the info what's the best dorm to pick? I'm not super picky; I just need to know which places are close to dining halls with vegetarian food.

Don't buy a Dell if you can help it. As Zack said, they are terribly overpriced. You can always get a computer with higher specs for the same price. If you give us your price range, I can recommend a computer for you. And I can guarantee you that its better than the dell you can buy for the same price. Well now Jack's twisting my words. Dell does charge you more than most, but their hardware is good to very good. There's no denying that. And if you go for their extra support, you will never have to deal with any issue alone. I could toss my $5k laptop out a window and Dell will send me a new one at no cost. Accidental damage = GOD.

There really is little difference in hardware. Zack paid out the ass for a laptop that isn't worth 5k, but lets let him believe what he wants.
As for the accidental damage, I'm not buying that stuff unless I intend to damage my laptop. I'd much rather spend the money from that and dell's premium price tag to buying a computer with higher specs. And just a note again, Zack. My computer's 3D mark is just a little bit below yours. Mine only cost $750. Deppreciation of technology does not drop by THAT much over 1 year. Just so you know, everyone says Zack is a moron for buying his laptop. He's the only one that defends his purchase.
Once again, give me price range so I can make reccommendation. Also, in terms of vegan stuff, your best bet is Hayden. However, all dining halls offer vegetarian options. Its just that Hayden offer the most vegetarian dishes outside of the salad bar.
Btw, Zack, lets test your statement out. Chuck your laptop out a window and see what Dell thinks.

I have to concur with Jack, Hayden is the best if you're a vegetarian/vegan, but I personally am not in love with its food. I really like Weinstein, which has TWO dining halls! However, if you're going to want to cook next year and have a full fridge AND a dining hall, apply for Third North. That's where I'm in now. It's a sweet deal, thought its a little farther away from campus and takes me 10-15 minutes to get to all my classes.
I offer my services for chucking it out the window Zack ^_^
And if you get into Brown, and it's your dream school, go! But I'm going to tell you I came to this school thinking I was going to hate but I now consider it the best decision I have ever made. I'm sure everyone whose been posting here would love to meet you in the fall but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I don't mean to push you away from NYU but if you get into Brown, and you wanna go, by all means, go. I have a friend that goes to Brown and he loves it there. It was his #1 school. So you won't be disappointed with it. If you do get into Brown, feel free to continue hanging out here. I think they have an anime club, but of course our's is better ;3 Who knows, maybe there'll be an opportunity to do a massive joint school anime program, and you can be our go to girl for communicating w/ Brown.
As for dorming, I lived in 3rd North my freshman year and I really liked it. It's further from campus but believe me, that's a good thing. You have more incentive to actually explore, like going to St. Marks, or 14th street. I have a feeling that if I was too close to campus, I never would've gone out past the Washington Square Park area.

It was obviously worth 5k to me (in 2008) otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Economics FTW. As for the accidental damage, I'm not buying that stuff unless I intend to damage my laptop. I'd much rather spend the money from that and dell's premium price tag to buying a computer with higher specs. When you start heading to my end of computers, there isn't much higher to go. I could spend money on AD or a slightly higher speed HDD. Or a SSD, but that's a complete waste of money XD (I was screwed by nVidia's GPU release timing My card was second best at the time...for 2 months) And just a note again, Zack. My computer's 3D mark is just a little bit below yours. Mine only cost $750. Deppreciation of technology does not drop by THAT much over 1 year. Crysis on max. /discussion I plan on doing it right before my AD ends XD I offer my services for chucking it out the window Zack ^_^ Maybe I'll hold an auction....=P

Zack, you do not know where to buy computers then. If you look back 1.5 years (should be about when you bought it), the 8700m gt sli was not even close to being the 2nd most powerful graphics card. If you truly want power at a premium, then you turned to the worst brand. The most powerful ATI graphics was Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2 by November 3, 2008 (I'm not sure what nVidia released at that time). I seriously doubt nVidia was almost a year behind ATI in terms of mobile graphics power. Even if they were that behind, a single Radeon HD 3870 is more powerful than the 8700 GT SLi. The website concerning the release date is below. www.tomshardware.com/news/Alienware-ATI-Crossfire-Gaming-Laptop,6553.html Zack, you bought a computer at Mac price without getting a Mac. Good job. It was worth 5k to you? Sure. But it was worth 2k-3k to everyone else. Now how well did you do in economics again? Next time you get a laptop and want to splurge, I want to introduce you to Alienware and Avadirect.

I haven't asked my dad what the price range is, but I'm guessing under $1000. Nothing super ridiculous. I don't know much about computers to be honest, but I'm going to need something with a large harddrive (500 GB+) and a good graphics card since I want to do animation stuff on it. I also need something that's good for programming/ computer science stuff (no idea what I need for that xD). Also something with a screen that's too small to work with but not too heavy (I'm a pretty small person to be carrying around a big laptop xD).
And in terms of animation stuff, I might end up having to learn animation in my free time because turns out the NYU animation courses cost $500 extra per course. -___- As if 54K a year wasn't already expensive enough... But it turns out there's a student version of the Maya software for around $300, which is insanely cheap. If I could figure that out on my own, it would be an alternative to animation courses.

First of all, Jack and Zack, please take your argument to another thread. We've all heard this at one point during the past year.
As for the computer, don't let all this talk confuse you. You can easily get a decent computer for under $1000 that can do whatever you need. Although my native intuition screams against it, you don't really need to put too much thought into buying your computer. Guys, if you want to give recommendations, just post a link or something, no need to bother with technical info. We can indoctrinate Rachel in our ways later.
If you get into Brown, I seriously urge you to go for it. While you will get a unique college experience at NYU, come on, its BROWN. I was also waitlisted to Brown last year but apparently I was not accepted. However, I definitely do not regret coming to NYU. Good luck!
P.S. Have you visited NYU yet? There are hordes of eager new victims students visiting everyday.

I visited NYU a year ago when I did my initial college search. The thing I remember the most is the ginormous library. XD Since I already did the tour I probably won't come back until orientation in June. It's a 3-4 hour drive from where I live. I didn't really get to see much of the dorms though...how do they compare? You guys can probably tell me more than the website can. ^^; I just got the housing application today, and I want to pick a good choice. :3 There are hordes of eager new victims students visiting everyday. O__O

Some dorms are fantastic, some dorms belong in radioactive treatment facilities. I dormed in 3rd north like Jeff, and had a great time.
For the computer, I had a dell partner company make mine (vostro, like the celeron of intel), and it works perfectly fine and still plays current-gen games alright. Don't even worry about it, but don't get fooled into paying more for bigger numbers that you don't even care about if you're not playing games on it. Processor, Hard Drive, and RAM are all you need to worry about.
These guys can help you argue if you care about gaming or extreme minutia, but don't even begin worrying about that stuff.
And welcome, don't get scared by our irc, Raf is weird (USDA WHATS THE BEEF etc), and even though NYU is a great school, Brown is probably still a better school... academically... in certain areas. :3

I have not been to all the freshman dorms so others will have to fill in the gaps. In no particular order: Brittany (10th Street and Broadway): This is where I live. It's pretty close to "campus" and the rooms aren't terrible. That's about all it has going for it. One of the only two dorms with no air conditioning but in the end, it really doesn't matter. Overall, can't really recommend. All the stories of ghosts are untrue by the way. Rubin (10th Street and 5th Ave): The other dorm that I am rather familiar with. It's pretty much the same as Brittany. Also has no AC and has annoyingly small elevators. But it does have a dining hall, so you don't need to go far for food. Most people do anyway since food isn't too great. Founders Hall (12 Street between 3rd and 4th Ave): Newest freshman dorm. I stayed here for my freshman orientation. Rooms are very nice with AC and easily cleanable floors. Distance from campus is farther than others but not bad. Has a courtyard but sadly no dining hall but that should not discourage you. Third North (11th Street and 3rd Ave): Apartment style rooms, meaning you have a kitchen and living area. It's very similar to what upperclassman dorms are like. My personal favorite in terms of room type. It has a dining hall and courtyard very conveniently downstairs. Also, location is very nice. Weinstein (University Place between 8th Street and Washington Square North): I haven't been to the rooms so I cannot attest. However, extremely close to main NYU buildings and it has not one but two dining halls, one of which is often open til 1 am. Hayden (Washington Square West between Washington Place and West 4th Street): I don't know much about this one. It has a dining hall, food is fair according to some. It's very close to campus just like Weinstein. Someone else will have to provide more info. Goddard (Washington Square East between Washington Place and West 4th Street): This place is smack dab in the center of NYU. I don't know anyone that love here so no info from me about rooms. However, it is the smallest freshman dorm and you have to apply to get in. No dining halls but extremely close to several others. Now, I've heard that Goddard is a bit strange but I'm not sure whether to believe the rumors or not. Guys, help me out here. Personally, if I had to choose again, I would pick either Third North or Weinstein. Also, check below link for specifics. Don't believe everything they say. www.nyu.edu/life/living-at-nyu/on-campus-living/explore-the-residencehalls.html.

Blah blah blah, I'll pull crap from my ass 1) I got my computer in early 2008. All you data is moot 2) I could have also gotten a cheaper computer. It's not like I'm restricted to Dell. I chose the m1730 for it's power (at the time this config was the fourth/fifth most powerfull laptop behind the same one with an 8800, the alienware m17x, and some other laptop that couldn't even do SLI properly), accidental damage (which means my computer gets reset to like-new at my whim), and one of the best customer support I've ever seen (silly normal DELL service). Apparently you are fine with "slightly below" my computer. I'm not. Though if I could go back, I'd wait till nVidia came out with their mobile 9800 card and get an Alienware m17x. *shakes fist at nVidia* EDIT: Also, lol ATI....

@ Rachel Ask your dad. Knowing your actual spending limit is crucial for reccommendations.
Also, I'll add a bit to what Chang added.
Founders: Nicest "looking" dorm. Been here only once. Everything looks so nice and shiny. Once you go to the rooms, really no different from anywhere else.
Brittany: Rooms are bigger than Rubin rooms. All I really know.
Rubin: The triple-room is the cheapest out of any other dorm, by far. Basically, the budget-dorm of NYU, though still expensive.
Weinstein: Been to 3 rooms. All of them double. All of them rather small.
Hayden: Been to one room here. About the same size as weinstein room, basically small. They share bathrooms with a room beside them. Best vegetarian dining hall. Eaten here a few times. If I was a vegetarian I would like it. But I'm not.
Goddard: Its the closest out of all dorms to the academic buildings. Not by much though.
Basically, here. Vegetarian food: Hayden Save money: Rubin Really late-night food: Weinstein You can cook: 3rd North You want that extra 5-10 minutes of sleep: Goddard

Okay, all further computer debating should be held in either the gaming or random section.
A lenovo's fine too. Not great for gaming but performs satisfactorily otherwise.
Hmm...freshman dorms....I recommend apartment style. About Goddard being weird. Well....I heard they tried to steal recycled bottles one time last year. >.>
