For those of you that want to go to NYAF together as a group, we will be meeting at the first floor of Kimmel at
Friday - 11am
Saturday - 9am
Sunday - 9am
If you need to meet me to get your ticket, call me once you get to the convention center and I'll find you.
For some of you, this is the first time going to a convention, for others, it's your first time at a convention in New York, and for the rest, well you might still wanna read this since I went through the trouble of typing it up.
Preparations
What to Bring:
Food
The food at the convention center is expensive and crumby. So one of the first things you might want to pack is lunch. Aside from convention center food, the nearest McDonald's is 3 blocks away. If you feel like walking out to get food, you can, but time outdoors is time wasted. What I usually do is pack a lunch to bring with me. A sandwich, or even a box of cheese nips or peanuts is fine. I have once sustained myself over the course of 3 days on nothing but Cheese Nips.
Also, bring water. It may not be sweltering hot in there, but you're bound to get thirsty and tired. Keep yourself hydrated.
Clothing
Well yeah, this should be obvious right? But we've got some cosplayers going and who knows what kind of clothing that entails. Just remember to dress warmly. It's been getting cold this past week. You don't want to get sick while you're having fun. Keep an eye on the weather and if it looks like it's gonna rain, bring an umbrella. In previous years, it's almost always rained at least on one day of the convention. Getting wet is not a great way to start off your day. *ahem*
Money
Bring money because you will be spending money. The atm machines at the convention center run out of cash really quickly. Make some withdrawals before you go, or you might find yourself wishing you had.
You may also wish to bring a camera to take pictures, and maybe a game to have something to do while you wait on line.
Directions:
If you're coming with us, then you won't need this as much, but you might still wanna familiarize yourself with it just in case you get lost or something.
To Jacob Javits Center
For directions on how to get to the Javits Center from Kimmel. Once you walk out of the Kimmel doors, start walking left(west) towards 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas. Once you reach 6th avenue, find the A C E subway station. You want to head uptown to 34th street. Any one of the trains will take you there, even the express. Once you get off at 34th Street, head west again towards the Hudson River until you reach the Javits Center. It may be difficult to situate yourself once you get out of the station, so just keep in mind that you're walking towards 11th Avenue. You'll eventually notice tall buildings getting less and less frequent.
Back home to Campus
Now for getting home, this could be scarier for you if you're new to the city. Especially at night if you're all alone in the unfamiliar world that is midtown. But fear not, it's not as difficult as it sounds. You can retrace your steps and take the A C or E train downtown. If you're having trouble finding the station, just head to 34th street and you should find it. If all else fails, ask for directions. Either from a random passerby or an mta official. You can ask people how to get to Union Square, it's probably the biggest most obvious landmark close to campus that most everyone will know.
Depending on where you live, it may be more convenient to get off at Union Square or 4th Street.
If you are trying to get off at Union Square, get off the ACE train at 14th street and transfer to the L train to take you to Union Square. Those going to campus can just take the ACE train down to 4th street and you'll end up where you started.
