Hey! My name is Joshua and I am semi new to anime. One of my best friends said I "HAD to see this anime" junior year of highschool. That anime being Death Note. I watched it and freaking fell in love!! Ahh what have I been missing! I then proceeded to watch, in this order: Code Geass, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Darker Than Black 1 and just finished 2. I realllllyyyy like Darker Than Black. So that's my story haha. I don't know why, but it just now hit me that NYU probably has an anime club and that I should definitely get involved in that! I am a Theater Major at Tisch Stella Adler. I can't wait for this to start back up next semester!

Why hello there. Welcome to the club. All of the anime you've mentioned is pretty much aligned with most of the faves of the guys here. So you won't have a problem getting additional recommendations. If you want to take a chance and venture with some non shounen (shounen being stuff targetted towards boys) stuff just approach any girl in the club.. specifically me, I like weird stuff. mwahahaha!
I'll look forward to seeing you at club, but don't let that stop you from joining events we might have before club starts up again. In fact you need to come to them since you're already on the forums! No excuse!

Hey Sapphi, actually yeah I would be interested in maybe trying out some non shounen. I didn't know "shounen" existed. That's awesome though, it's basically like the action genre in movies? and then I'm guessing non shounen is like the romantic comedy genre? haha I'm probably way off.. Anyways, yes I would love to do events! I want to get involved and meet new people! Especially people who love anime. I only have about 3 friends that I know that like anime and they all live in Oklahoma where I'm from. Everyone else, roommates and such, think I'm weird for watching "cartoons"!

Welcome Joshua. Nice selections you got there. You definitely are aligned with us guys in the club as far as our favorite anime. As far as non-shounen material, Sapphi is right. You can ask any girl for recommendations to great non-shounen material. Sapphi herself is an expert in making great recommendations in that field (wow, this makes it sound as if she got a maser's degree in non-shounen recommendations. lol).
Trust me when I say you will have loads of fun in the club. Besides our regular meetings (luckily, we have all the Thursdays from the beginning of the semester to the end), we are definitely making some group/outside events that many of us will enjoy. So far in the past, we had a restaurant night (where we got to learn more about each other and explored some of the great Asian foods on St. Marks place) and Karaoke Night. Of course, there are some members who love to hold their own gathering dedicated to some theme (Rage night, Yuyu Hakusho night, Shounen night, etc). Again, there are so many things to do and you will have fun doing it. If you have any recommendations, thoughts, opinions, or anything that comes to your head, feel to free post it on the forums or email/message any of the members (unless its an important question that only the E-Board can solve).
Once more welcome to the NYU Club Anime.

ROFL Luis!
lol @ your roommates Joshua, I like to maintain that if you don't like anime, you merely haven't found your anime genre yet.
'Shounen' means boy. So it would be the stuff targetted towards them. You're right, very action oriented. Of course comedy elements can be included in this though. As you watch more anime, you'll notice trends. For example in shounen, the main character (guy) never wants to give up, there's random power ups just when guy is about to lose, and even a somewhat distinct art style. Seinen is for older boys, and generally deals with more serious plot elements, delving into the psychology of the characters, dealing with more sexual plot elements, and more violence is shown.
"Shoujo" is the opposite, aiming towards girls, with Josei being the adult counterpart. Of course it has it's own trends, and usually a noticably different art style. Of course these two categories have hugeeee spectrums, you can look at two different Shoujo (say, Sailor Moon vs. Gokusen [yes, Gokusen is a Josei omgwtfbbq]) and be shocked that they're considered in the same category. And then there's anime in catagories that have nothing to do with Shounen vs. Shoujo like Mushishi and Genshiken. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.
How do you watch anime Joshua, do you download the eps, or stream on Youtube or some other site? Do you watch fansubs? Anyway, from your interests, I would recommend to you Michiko to Hatchin, and Samurai Champloo. And if you want to venture into some 'non-shounen' I'd recommend Ef - a tale of memories and Dennou Coil. Ef and Dennou aren't really shoujo (targetted towards girls) but breathtaking stories with superb direction and animation. If you want a random genre (mystery, romance, action etc etc) I can recommend something from that for you too.
And you're from Oklahoma? I was born in Oklahoma! So awesome.
If you want more info check out Wikipedia, and a site called TV tropes. TV tropes lays out every anime term/character type you could think of and explains it.
There's also a lot of anime databases where you can keep track of anime you've watched and get more info on them. animenewsnetwork.com is a great site where you can look up all of the names I've just thrown around lol. If you torrent I can tell you great torrent sites to download anime.

Wait, I thought youtube exterminated most, if not all, anime series? So they still have a few episodes/series up that are actually good? I shall further investigate. Also, when I read the "omgwtfbbq" section, I honestly thought to myself "oh-my-god-what-the-fu**-bar-be-que." Don't ask me why. It is just my thought process going haywired. Just thought I should share that.

There's still some anime series up there Luis. lol that's what you were supposed to read LOL!!! omgwtfbbqroflmao! Anyway there's CrunchyRoll too, but I'm pretty much boycotting that site in favor of real HDTV torrents. Jack's elitism is rubbing off on me....

@metalgearsilux- That sounds awesome! I can't wait to meet everyone and I love Asian food so much!! I plan on going to Japan next summer, it's halfway a fantasy, but knowing me it'll end up happening. So I've started learning Japanese. Haven't got too far, but plan on really studying it once this semester picks back up. I've been too lazy this break. @sapphi- That whole post just blew my mind. The Japanese culture is sooo interesting!!! They have different types for different age groups. That's just so awesome. I've been told that I should see Samurai Champloo. I've also been told that I need to see Monster because it was just dubbed. Although I've tried looking for it and I haven't found Monster dubbed anywhere.. hmm. And usually I go to zomganime or justdubs. That's where I've watched most the animes. ...and is it bad that I read oh-my-god-what-the-f**-bar-be-que as well? ...and is it bad that I still don't know what bbq is?!?

lol bbq really is bar-be-que. What else would it be? You are learning Japanese? I am in Japanese Intermediate II. I believe Kevin and Jeff are also taking Japanese. So you can ask any of us and we can help you. Samurai Champloo is a show set in the Edo period, with urban anachronisms. Thus, you get breakdance samurai fighting. Monster is a creepy psychological mystery series about a doctor accused of something horrible. It is surreal. I would consider both classics just because they are set as a standard and comparison/conversation point for a lot of anime and criticaly acclaimed. I was mistaken about my genre categorization of Monster earlier, it's actually considered a Seinen. I highly recommend you watch anime dubbed in Japanese, fansubbed in English. While there are -some- good dubs out there (anything by Miyazaki) most of the time, the original Japanese voice actors are far better at conveying emotion. So the tone of the anime is more likely to come across as intended rather than cheesy. I looked at the zomganime site and it looks like they do subbed stuff? In my personal opinion good dubs definitely -do- exist, but you will come across a few elitists who insists that dubs are merely God's tool to punish us anime fans and there is no such thing as a good dub. XD Where do you get your recommendations and stuff? You seem to have hit jackpots in terms of popularity. I'd also recommend that you download the anime if you have the harddrive space. Better sound and picture quality will let you enjoy it more. If you want to consider downloading, let me know and I'll hook you up with all the infos on how to do it. I'm also on AIM (twilightmiasma). Oh and I am -totally- your new senpai now!! (senpai = upper classman in a particular topic/mentor) Oh, and if you're interested, next year we're having a Japanese Visual Media explorations floor: nyuclubanime.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=suggestions&action=display&thread=158It also looks like we might be going to Japan this Spring Break: nyuclubanime.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=suggestions&thread=193&page=1

Hey Joshua, welcome to our little slice of the interwebs.
Code Geass, Death Note, YuYuHakusho. You sound like my kind of people.
Most of what everyone already said is a good intro to our club. The biggest thing is to be active on our forums since that's how we decide what to watch, do, etc.
We have food every meeting. but usually pizza or snacks. At the end of last semester we had Japanese food as a sort of end-of-year party and watched a couple of movies.
Check us out at club fest if you want to talk to the eboard or grab free pocky.
Also, "BBQ" is sorta like a parodied way of using shorthand/1337-speek (omg/wtf/gtg/ftw).

@sapphi- Thanks for the heads up and those links! I may be moving into an apartment with some friends next year but if I don't then I'm all over that explorations floor!!! And that's funny you say that stuff about the dubs because all the anime's previous to DTB Season 2 were all dubbed and then I just couldn't wait for DTB Season 2 to get dubbed so I watched the subs of it and I liked it soooo much more!! It's true, I could really feel the emotion and it felt more natural watching. At first I thought I was going to hate it lol. Also I would love for you and Kevin and Jeff to help me with Japanese if your up for it because: 1.) I don't really have a way of learning. (I have a Japanese packet from Rosetta Stone that my friend put from his computer to mine, but it doesn't work....) 2.) I learn better from people! @zero- I love food! I'm like Hei from DTB. Haha that was one of my favorite character choices about him; the way he ate so much. It's also funny because my friends think I have a tapeworm! Oh, and what is "club fest"? Okay and now I'm scared to talk about this subject of "BBQ" because it's slowly becoming more and more sensitive to me.. BUT .. So she was saying omgwtfbbq as meaning "oh my god what the F*** bar be que" ? And she added the BBQ as a joke right? It isn't some kind of new internet slang that has somehow slipped by me? Because I literally spent about 5 minutes trying to spell out something other than "bar be que" and couldn't think of anything that would make too much sense..? I just want to get that cleared up haha.
