I'm just tossing this out there, but i met some people in the audience who actually haven't watched what we consider as common knowledge among anime watchers... like K-on, lucky star or even haruhi. You might want to make some sort of poll to see what % of ppl have seen them, as common as they are. either that or have a "Anime 101" night, though that may be a bit much, maybe integrate maybe 1 common anime per night. i have to agree with the moe and fanservice overdose -_- if you want more action suspense, Pandora Hearts is always a good start since it just finished up a couple of weeks ago. Darker Than Black comes out like this week or next week, Tatakau Shisho doesn't look half bad either judging from the first episode

We should have both an anime 101 night and a "BYOA" night (bring your own anime), you know. One would consist of the essentials (evangelion, haruhi, lucky star, TTGL, etc), while the other would have whatever we felt like bringing in (to love-ru, strawberry panic, Love Hina, etc)
(LOLOLOLOL)
But seriously, both are good ideas.
Also, I forgot to vote for Seitokai no Ichizon in the poll, because I did the poll without remembering what it was.
Also, K-on isn't that bad at all. However, I don't really want to watch it in club... because I'm watching slowly through it right now.

LOL. Those sound like excellent idea. I think we should that announcement for the next meeting so that when we all get together in our last Thursday of October (29th), we can have it as a BYOA and Anime 101 day. I mea we already have two people who would like to bring their own stuff (Blue Seed and Otaku no Video, which both I approve). Why not make it happen. We still have lots of time to plan it out (almost 3 weeks). Thoughts? Comments?

The problem I have with moe is the same issue I have with casual video games (wii fit, rock band, wii sports) and reality TV: THERE'S NO FUCKING PLOT!
The way I see it, if it doesn't have a plot or doesn't make you laugh, there's no need to spend waste time with it.
I don't need to watch moe girls being moe, practice quasi-virtual yoga, or watch idiots who can't sing make fools of themselves, and I can't comprehend why anyone would.
And fyi, I saw enough K-On to solidify my position on the matter. About 10 minutes. In retrospect, I'm surprised I lasted that long....
I hope something this year can match some of the awesome we had last year (FMA, Soul Eater, Xam'd, Sunred, Bacano) but so far, from what I've seen, this seasom has mostly been lame fanservice.
I guess I can blame it on the recession (or Luis).
Hopefully things will pick up for some of the shows with potential (Umineko, Ga Rei) and we can have some more awesome in the Spring '10 season.

The problem I have with slice of life is the same issue I have with casual video games (wii fit, rock band, wii sports) and reality TV: THERE'S NO FUCKING PLOT! *fixed. Moe is a style of art, not a genre. In that respect, umineko is also moe, yet you don't seem to have a problem with it.

I'm actually cool with moe and casual games. Reality TV... Ick... To me, plot doesn't always seem necessary. In a novel, yes, but in something like an episodic series or a slice of life, maybe not. Of course it then has to make up with things like good characters, great jokes, or just something that puts satisfaction on my face after 22 minutes. I thought K-On! was okay at best, the moe did it for me. As for video games, things like Pokemon (especially the battle sims like Stadium) are virtually plotless, but honestly, given the option, I wouldn't conduct a serious battle any other way. Guitar Hero and Rock Band do take some skill to do, especially if Dragonforce and Expert Mode are anywhere involved.

Ah, indeed it appears that I have confused the two (doesn't help that K-on is both forms of annoying). Point still stands though.
To each his own, but I'd pick Metal Gear Solid, Heroes, and Death Note over Guitar Hero, So you think you can Dance, and K-On any day. The problem is that the latter usualy sells better, is cheaper, and ends up killing the former. That's why I hate/rage/rant.

So I ask everyone this question; what the HE** was the point in Barney? Arthur? Mario is Missing? FF8 (yes Zack, I chose this since the recession in rage mode)? As Chad said, we all have different taste. What Zack consider moe and pretty much plotless (thus not worth his time) would be different from Aaron's thought on the same series/episode/show, etc. It all depends on the watcher's upbringings/roots and taste. End of discussion.
P.S. I agree with cancer Zack regarding this season's anime shows. If worse comes to worse, we can create our own series.

I would just like to point out that Zetsubuou sensei is a slice of life. Anyway, don't worry, if I do show k-on, I won't show anything past the first episode. I'm sure you can endure that much at least. Oh and for the record, k-on is not cheaper. k-on=lotsa money out of my pockets.
Aaron's got that covered. Actually, aaron, why don't you make a thread for your completely illogical nyu anime idea.
And did someone say Barney?

Hold on, i thought Moe was a type of character trait, not a form of art. Miyuki in lucky star was considered "Moe".

Hold on, i thought Moe was a type of character trait, not a form of art. Miyuki in lucky star was considered "Moe". It can mean both. The moe style in art usually denotes big eyes and the exaggeration of cute features(some consider haruhi moe in this sense). The way Konata refers to Miyuki's moe qualities, she's refering to the characteristics side of moe. In this sense, moe can mean things that are just too cute. Like Miyuki's clumsiness, or her general mannerisms. Take seitokai no ichizon for instance. While the show has moe designs already, this scene in particular was moe. So you can kind of think of moe as the extreme form of cute(it's not really accurate but close enough). You can find the art style cute but you can also find certain characteristics cute.
