Hmm, perhaps I should take a solo lane more often then. Usually, I go for Rod of Ages first, and try to get the mpen boots concurrently. After that, I either get Rylai's or Void Staff, depending on if I need the HP or not. If I need to, I might get a defensive item as well (something like negaton cloak), as well as get the other item (if I got Rylai's, I'd go for Void Staff next, and vice versa). If I ever get enough gold, I'd finish off with a Rabadon's. Masteries, so far, would be a offensive with preference given to ap, cooldown reduction, and mp5 ones. For runes, I get flap AP for red, flat mpen for blue, flat mp5 for yellow, and I want to get flat AP for quints, as well. However, it seems I'm starting to get my positioning more and more. The last game I played, I wasn't focused as much, because I was in the rear quite a bit, but I still have to work on it.
when building for carries, ALWAYS consider yourself to be building for either mid or solo top. Malz is a carry. You might want to try another mage, in addition to malz, because while he's a solid pick the quicksilver sash will basically make you useless, as will any hard cc as soon as your ult begins. A good malz is focused hard, like a good katarina or anyone whose ult can be cc'ed out.
Yeah, that's one of the reasons it's good to know how to play a bunch of characters. If you join a match and two people immediately lock in Vlad and Ashe, it really doesn't make sense for you to pick Malz, cause you've already got two perfect solo lanes. Even though Malz is a top tier mage, it makes more sense for your team at that point if you pick a tank or a jungler or something. (Or pick amumu and get both lolololol)
If you see that there aren't two solid solo lanes, that's when you wanna pick Malz. But in our lower brackets, things are usually out of whack anyway. I've seen Ashe duo lane with Caitlyn while Rumble takes middle, people will pick perfect junglers and then lane instead, etc. So you can usually count on there just being a solo in mid, and ~hopefully~ your team sets itself up so you have a second solo lane.
Although, you don't even get solo mid in every match. I was in this hilarious game where xin zhao takes mid, then cho'gath goes mid as well because "we're friends". The enemy Annie walks out and sees this and just goes LOL in all chat.
This is a pretty big victory for people who love Morde, since a lot of people (myself included) consider him kind of useless. I'd been coming around on Morde though, I'd seen some pretty diesel AP Morde's in streams I'd watched, but this kind of proves that there's more to the character than just hue hue hue.
