Has anyone bought/tried this game yet? My friend was thinking about getting it, but he wants to know opinions of people who've already tried it.
Is it worth the monthly subscription fee if he's a really casual gamer (like 1 or 2 hours per week max) and is it pretty much the same as FFXI?
Thanks!

honestly, I don't think it's worth the subscription if he only plays it a little bit. Like any other mmo, the focus is on questing and grinding and crafting, all of which take a hell of a lot of time and effort. And he might find himself spending too much time on it.
There are plenty of ex-addicted mmoers in our club, but I'd say just leave the mmo on the shelf and save the money for SWTOR (star wars the old republic) if you have to get an mmo. Plus I heard the game's not incredible or anything. I'll ask nick, who I think has been playing the beta.

I played in alpha and beta (oh snap!) and it was okay...much like FFXI you really need to rely on guilds to actually have fun. Thank goodness for linkshells. Graphically, it's pretty. The Christmas event on it may be nice...But I wouldn't really buy it. It's pretty but it's only fun with a good and hilarious linkshell group. Errr.... Um... "Stick yer manhood in the forge" <- Most amusing quote in that game.

Nick reporting in. I bought the CE of the game so i've been playing since the 22nd of september. like mike said, any mmo requires time. ff14 is a little unique. it tries to sell itself to the casual player but the game is so complex, you'll spend hours learning the nuances. i mean buying something at the market can take up or crafting a piece of armor can take up to 10 minutes. its just that complex. the quest system especially tries catering to the casual. you can only do a certain amount of quests before you have to wait 48 hours to take new ones. i will eventually post an in depth review on ff14 here on the forums for any curious about it. if he is only going to play 1-2 hours a week max, then i do not recommend paying the subscription. like i said, ff14 tries to cater to the casual, but the complexity of the game can throw you for a loop. if you are going to be at this week's meeting, find me and i'll gladly give you the scoop.
