Hey sup pplz, I noticed during the meeting that u guys use the fan subbed versions of alot of anime, which means u gotta have good sites for the stuff. So, which sites do you guys use to find the fan subs and how do you choose which anime are good? I can never tell if an anime is going to be good to watch or not.

I usually go to the fansubbers site. Most of them have one. Check myanimelist or anidb for the sites. isohunt also works pretty well if I'm having trouble finding something. Okay, about the whole legality of fansubs thing, I won't get into it but I will warn you that I received a notice from some third party copyright company for downloading a series. The message was sent to nyu and I had to basically take down/delete the torrent. There weren't any serious repercussions but I really don't know if that kind of thing goes on my record. It doesn't happen a lot and only some shows are monitored by copyright companies. Like currently canaan, which we saw tonight, is being watched, so be careful about downloading it. Find other ways to get it like through DDL. NYU will find out if those copyright people catch you.

Pretty much Jeffrey's and kinkykevin's answers describe how I get my anime. As far as which ones are the good ones, I guess it depends on what you read and what type of anime you are going for. We sometimes use blog and other anime sites such as the anime news network to get an idea for the anime. Otherwise, the best way to find which is the good ones is either if you have read the corresponding manga to it (for next meeting, we will present a series that started as a manga and its becoming one of the best series for the summer and Fall anime lineup) or just trial and error. We'll probably talk about this in a future meeting for those who don't have time to look for the best (or we can talk about it here as well).

At home, I used to use boxtorrents, which became bakabt or whatever. However, like Jeffrey stated, sometimes the odd series is licensed and those guys will notify NYU (I've been caught twice now, once re-downloading oblivion and the other for HBO's Entourage). Never for an anime series, but NYU will enforce copyright and it's shitty. >.>
Go to fansubbers' sites. Direct downloads are best.

cool, thanks everyone. I normally use reality lapse or animea, (direct download sites) because using bittorrent at NYU freaks the hell out of me. I heard this one time a guy got fined $30,000 for downloading 30 songs and seeding it.

I could definitely see that happening. But put yourself in that guy's position. Is it worth the risk to download 30 songs and seeding it? My answer is yes. Yes it was.

I usually just watch whatever anime my usual fansubers sub. I hate going to a new fansubber cause usually they do something stupid that I don't like such as hardsubs, no kareoke, spelling the name of people stupidly.
Dattebayo, Taka, Eclipse, Doremi, Eclipse, gg, Aoi, and gleamstreet are my usual ones.

because i'm still iffy on the torrenting policy on ResNet, i use my ddl sources to get my anime fix
sakurahana - my favorite forum where i upload stuff as well getfansub.com - not as organized but they have ddl to a lot of series not being torrented anymore, or at least they used to
if i can't find it at those two sites, i go net diving.

Don't get me ranting about legality of fansubs again......
Basically if it's not licensed you can download it. If it is licensed you can download/watch/seed the Japanese original unless you get a C&D notice from the US publisher.
Copyrights are not magically international.....
