Hey everyone! I'm jut starting this thread to make a specific point, and that point is that the anime club needs to hold other activities than watching anime more often. Like, every meeting.
After all, we can all watch anime on our own, but together we can do so much more. The ones who can draw can get a doujinshi/fan art circle going, and we can open a booth at a con, for example. Or we can play video games more often. Or whatever. Use Genshiken for ideas! Either way, we need to watch anime sometimes, not all the time.

You have no idea how much I've been wanting to say this. Look at PolyTech they hold events! I believe, I need to check up on that again. But it's possible that we can do something like what Japan International did last term. It doesn't have to big though, just something that would be fun to hold. I did this in my high school a couple of times before so I'm willing to help out.
But on the flipside, I don't believe the club has much funding. I forgot where I heard that from. BUT! There's always fundraising. *totally willing to sacrifice her dignity* I'd like to try something new though. ^-^;

We do other stuff other than watch anime, for your information. Make an effort to get involved and get to know more people, you'll discover many things.

There are events and marathons organized on the forums and Facebook. Basically, friend everyone and lurk on the forums and you'll see something you're interested in. Or start something up. But aside from an event every month or two, the weekly meetings are generally reserved for watching anime.
If you really want to hang with us, come by the Kimmel 2nd floor lounge whenever you're free. There's always a few of us hanging out there playing games and having philosophical debates such as if Jew believe in Jesus (true stoy).
There were plans for a restaurant outing that kinda fell apart. We'll try to reschedule for next week or so.
@farrah, yes we're poor. We get a significant increase every year, but our initial budget was small. Right now we can cover food for every meeting, but not much else.

I organize the restaurant outings. Cause food is yummy.
Anything else is too much social interaction...

1) The ones who can draw can get a doujinshi/fan art circle going, and we can open a booth at a con, for example. 2) Or we can play video games more often. Or whatever. 3) Use Genshiken for ideas! Either way, we need to watch anime sometimes, not all the time. 1) I'm all for doing the doujinshi idea. But someone would need to organize it. I'm cool with it being an Anime club thing, but if you're interested in doing this, you may want to look into one of our "sister" clubs, the East Asian Literature Society. They're a publication club so they have the funds to actually produce printed work. Though I don't think they can actually produce anything with ero content. 2) We have done this in the past. Interest in the games wasn't too great. But thanks for reminding me about it. I think it's about time we had a game night. I will see about arranging something for next week. 3) Haha~ Did you watch Genshiken? All they ever did was sit in the club room reading doujinshi and watch Kujibiki Unbalance. Sure, they eventually put out a doujinshi and did some cosplay events with other clubs, which we could theoretically do given enough volunteers and someone to head such a project. Your genshiken reference did give me the idea of having some kind of Gundam building workshop, which could be headed by Nick if he chooses. But it would take hours to do that. A lot of prep work required, but doable. Well, anyway, we are actually working on something at the moment. There is some uncertainty as to whether what we have planned will work out, so we'll keep it secret for now. Hi~ Mi~ Tsu~! @farrah, yes we're poor. We get a significant increase every year, but our initial budget was small. Right now we can cover food for every meeting, but not much else. Barely. I still don't know how our budget is so low. There were plans for a restaurant outing that kinda fell apart. We'll try to reschedule for next week or so. >__> I organize the restaurant outings. Cause food is yummy. Orly? Please take care of it. I leave it in your capable hands.

Quick note: A group gunpla building event is a bad idea.

I think the gunpla event is a good idea, but it has to be organized well. Have everyone who wants to participate buy their own models and sign up ahead of time so we know how many people there are. Also, take the meeting to go over specific techniques instead of just "hey let's build together" style. For example, how should one sand efficiently? What's the best way to apply decals? What are the best materials to use? Answer these and other questions.
Also, I'm sure that judging by the awesome drawings on the board, we could put out some good art for Boston Anime Con. How about we draw our art first, and once we have something we can show NYU, we request the funds? Also, I'll ask when I get to the meeting tomorrow if I can briefly speak about this topic before the meeting gets fully started, as this discussion will be much more productive in person.

u sound pretty pretentious for a new comer...im going to go with what jack said earlier: make an effort to get involved and get to know people before spouting off via internet forum. majority of us know each other; we have no idea who you even are. no introductory post or anything. before you start going off it's simple manners to introduce yourself. and as zack and jeff said earlier the meetings are generally reserved for watching anime. we do have special events but the major events are held outside of club (due to lack of club funding) via planning by other members, which jack and i tend to do a lot. we like getting to meet other people and getting to know one another but a lot of that requires that you be engaged not just in meetings. don't expect meetings to be the end all in meeting and getting to know others. part of that involves not being such a social outcast who is invisible and mostly quiet and be someone who has the initiative to go put one's self out there. if you see us in the kimmel lounge come and talk to us; that's how schnapps met us i believe.
oh and a few more things buddy; one: the gunpla event. since i'm the (self-proclaimed) gundam master in club (having watched every series and built around 50 kits), building gundams is no easy task if you wanna do it right. asking people to go and buy a kit is not cheap (relatively speaking as HG kits run about $15-20) which could be used to buy more essential things like food. not to mention all the other materials needed to properly construct one i.e. sand paper (or file), paint, brushes, clippers, markers, scalpel, erasers, tweezers, tooth brush (not kidding...great to scrub down ur gundam after ur done), and if the kit is MG or above, spray paint (or if you wanna be cool, air brush). this is not an easy task; if i really wanted to teach people to build gunpla, i would hold it (again) OUTSIDE of club. not everyone in club is going to want to build and if we dedicate an entire meeting to gunpla building, we're just going to alienate people.
two: Anime Boston. dude i've been planning this shit since last semester. have you checked the post on anime boston here on the forums? on facebook? made by yours truly. unfortunately, not everyone in club can go due to two very important things: TIME and MONEY (the latter i think being more constraining). yes we have a bunch of talented artists and guess what? we actually WERE going to do our own VN; naturally, due to TIME constraints it's on hold (also due to a certain someone named *cough* HANNAH *cough*). but i'm going to ask a few people to draw some stuff for my website. with all things considered, it will be VERY hard to do something for anime boston. oh did i mention that we still have to PAY for the artist alley table? and what the con is a little over two months away? and request funding from NYU? seeing as we couldn't get nada from NYU for NYCC/NYAF, yeah...
i guess the moral of the story is: get to know us beforehand (actually a simple introductory message would have sufficed) before spouting off. oh and i tend to be a pretty abrasive guy, even more so when i'm a little irked. don't take things too personally.

Nick's a little harsh with his words, but seriously. Don't assume that we're socially incapable like stereotypical otaku. It's very condescending, and you're not going to make friends with me at the very least with that kind of attitude.
And as nick said, if you looked through the facebook group or dug through the forums a bit, you would know that we do plenty of things other than just watch anime at club. O__O (BIKURI-SHTA!!!!)
Seriously, everything you've suggested is either already being done, or not really happening due to constraints. Overall though, we tend to be rather whimsical people. That's why I believe things like the VN and "moarpowah.com" probably won't happen (soon).
I'm down for a casual gunpla building event though. By casual, I mean nothing hardcore, just a cheap $20 HG one. Tbh, I expect 5 people to come at most. We also tend to be poor/cheap.

Uh, excuse the crazy replies from our older club members, Nick and Jack kind of went too far on their defensive outcry. This club isn't exactly the most inclusive group around, and for newcomers it might feel like we don't spend too much time outside of club together. However, there a lot of things we do together - mainly
1. We hang out all day in the commuter lounge at the tables. Introduce yourself and be friendly, we'll be friendly. 2. Come to club and talk to the people around you. Despite the way most of the people look with their exclusive little groups, we're a welcoming group of people. 3. Lurk the forums to see what we do and what we do together. A lot of us also play games together like LoL and touhou, so find out what's what.
A lot of people here seemed to take your post offensively; that doesn't seem to be your attitude and I think they took offense to the idea that our group doesn't do much together. We actually see each other on a regular basis - don't be scared off by the mean folks and just stick your head into club. Hopefully see you again next meeting!

This thread has taken a turn for the worse. I just wanna say a few things. Constructive criticism is fine. I encourage it. If you have an opinion on something that can be improved, please feel free to share it. Member input is what this place is for. I don't want anyone to be afraid of sharing ideas or their opinions. alphaomega: I hope the replies haven't scared you off. Please feel free to come talk to me at club sometime. He could've went to the commuter lounge and talked to people. A lot of people hang out at the commuter lounge, but it's not exactly common knowledge. Outside of the usuals, there's a lot of people that don't know about it. Or people that just don't have the time to hang around there. Just saying, it's not an "official" thing. I think the Welcome thread might help alleviate some trouble.

Whoa, I was thinking the forums didn't have enough drama....nice save there guys....
>__>
@mike, let it drop. @nick, I feel you were kind of aggressive, and I know you. Someone new might take offense.
*Flamy posts of flame are baleeted*
Anyway, like mike said, just approach people. I would say a good 70% of us hang out in the commuter lounge at some point or another. It's the chillest lounge on campus.
Also feel free to talk to people at club, but (and I intend to make an announcement next week), please try to sit in the back if you're gonna be talking. It's quite distracting when you spend the entire meeting talking and you're sitting in the middle of the room.

It's quite distracting when you spend the entire meeting talking and you're sitting in the middle of the room. This is a reasonable request. It does get pretty noisy when everyone's talking. Guess we can mention it next week.
