Food was nom indeed! Also, what was that course they were talking about from the East Asian Studies Dept? Thank you for asking. There are 2 anime related courses being offered by the East Asian Studies department. There is the: Japanese Animation and New Media V33.0708 Looser. 4 points. Looks at the terms and conditions of Japanese animation (primarily, though not exclusively, anime) as, in many ways, a new and unique mode of expression. Examines the ways in which anime might, or might not, shift earlier modes of expression (both literary and animated): the prevalence of mythology in animation and the tension between mythology and ideology; the importance of genre; and the impact of “old” and “new” media on narrative structure and reception. Implications of these conditions for thinking about “Japanese” culture are also considered. It's held Mondays 12:30pm to 4pm. Now that's a 3 hours class, but you spend most of that 3 hours watching anime. There are weekly readings assigned(pfft, not that I ever read them) and 3 papers in the class. The way the class works is, Looser spends the first half hour or so talking about the readings and then he starts up the anime. Just sit back and relax. It is a course about anime, but you also talk about the origins of Japanese art and animation. You see early Japanese works of art that inspired more modern artists and some really old classics like Astro Boy and the Harlock saga. There is some work involved, but it's not too difficult and where else can you write a paper about anime? There is also Anime V33.0709 Yoshimoto. Offered every year. 4 points. Introduces students to the rich world of Japanese animation or anime, its form and style, history, popular genres and themes, major authors, and fan culture. Explores the popularity of anime in relation to the cultural conditions of contemporary Japan and that of the world. I don't know if this Anime class is actually going to be offered next semester since it's not listed in the schedule list or at least I can't find it. I'll look into it further. source: eas.as.nyu.edu/object/eas.undergrad.courses.sp11eas.as.nyu.edu/object/eas.1012.ug.courses
