not to be a Heisig nut, but I'd strongly recommend his Remembering the Hiragana/Katakana books as well (in addition to the aforementioned app), possibly even more than the kanji one. I learned all the katakana in literally one evening, one sitting, no sweat. It's practically a miracle. That sort of reminds me of this one video. Back on topic though, how far do the Remembering the Kana books go? Because I've pretty much got hiragana down, and some of katakana, so unless the books go further than learning all the characters, they are sort of useless to me.

that's essentially all they are for, but the pneumonic devices he provides are super handy, it's become more difficult for me to forget them than remember them. There is a table in the back of the books with all the combinations as well. A couple of brief little exercises. But it's not a workbook or anything, if that's what you are asking. No grammar. It's really just a memory tool. Personally I think that initial hurdle is the hardest part, which is why I'd recommend them to anyone who is starting out/having trouble with the characters. But as you say, if you've already got them down pretty well, they likely won't be of much use to you.

Well, I'm wondering if they could help me read characters even faster. As it stands, it takes me a few seconds to associate hiragana characters with their romanizations. It's almost impossible to read moving text, as a result.

I'm probably not the one to speak on that because my Japanese REALLY sucks haha. But I don't see how a method that helps you commit the characters to memory without much effort WOULDN'T help you read faster. I can recognize the kana pretty quickly these days without having to struggle over each one. (like the title of フラクタル!)
