I'll try to convince him that other than the fact that me and Jeff are going to walk around the dorm in our underwear all the time, there's no reason why people should be offended.
I'll be in Kimmel until 12:55ish.

So then what is the state of the floor then? Is it still in or do we have to somehow throughout next year prove we're doing things?

After wandering around with Zack and Frank for like an hour trying to find it, I went to a random computer near the Bursar's office to email Mr. Pe, I ran into Chad. Chad was nice enough to tell me where the office was (not where Zack and Frank said it was LOL).
I waited for him for awhile, then when he got back Mr. Pe and I had a long talk. Basically he told me that as a Chinese American when he read the description and was offended by how he thought we were portraying Chinese people and wanted to make sure that since we were 12 people from anime club who made the floor we weren't a shallow community that just watched Kung Fu movies. I told him that my main goal is to be inclusive of everyone elses (anime or not) interests, that only about 5/40 people (he didn't actually know how many people RSVPd) who signed my initial RSVP form were actually from anime club, and that I also got non-anime fans from Japan international and the East Asian studies to sign up (the rest of the 35 people).
I stated that I am trying my best to not keep the events polar to one interest, that I want to diversify the events. I also told him about how we already discuss subtle trends in media that we observe from watching things like anime. How we sometimes discuss how this affects or is affected by the culture in which it it created (moe, akihabara... hehe). And whether these things are trends or starting points for the evolution of a genre. But I especially made sure to state that we weren't going to cater to the interest of only anime club (what he was afraid of dunno why). I also mentioned that I made the description appealing to non-otaku on purpose, because I think that new fans and old fans can come together to create a dialogue. I asked him if he wanted me to change anything and he said no, he just wanted to make sure that my idea wasn't as shallow and polar as he thought it was when he read it.
He said now he understands the true goals behind our explorations floor and we won't need to meet with him again.

Hey, I don't know where stuff is in Manhattan. That's why god invented Google Maps.
Anyway, seems like it was just a misunderstanding, and all is good now.

I made it pretty damn clear what we're all about.
No idea what the hell he was talking about half the time, though. He was quite timid for someone who initially wrote such a strong response.
Is your floor going to happen for certain or do you have to wait and see?

Happening for sure.
He was pretty much just pissed off at the mention of kung-fu movies (as if we were going to be insulting towards Chinese culture and do only that). After my talk with him he then understood that it was mostly focused on Japanese visual culture anyway. Then he tried to warn against only doing anime activities (for why, I don't know.. I think it's because he thought from Chad's conversation that Anime club made the floor which isn't true..) which is when I explained in detail purpose of the entire floor and how I want to appeal to every type of Japanese visual media fan and have different types of fans (casual, gamers, live-action) all interact with each other. Then he said something about putting ourselves in the shoes of East Asians instead of Westerners and I smiled and nodded.
I don't think he read the application where I explained in detail the activities we would do (and the fact that members are organizing them too) because he told me he didn't want me blowing off all the money on video games. In the application (found in the exploration thread) I clearly state that this floor is for visual-novel, games, live-action, anime, and manga etc. fans not just anime. (Then I offered him a copy of the activities and the application but he didn't read it).
Anyway, I offered to change the description but he didn't want me to. We're good.

BTW he might read this forum since I mentioned that we have detailed conversations about anime rather than just shallowly watching it.

Bad idea, we have some rather... interesting conversations. Not to mention other things normal people disapprove of, which I will not elaborate on in case he reads this.

I appreciate your guys'es concern with what resources I use when I am making an argument, but sometimes when I am discussing with someone who isn't from the same knowledgeable background as us I have to resort to evidence that not everyone will "officially" approve of. (such as TV Tropes, and referencing the fact that here we talk about deeper issues than just kung fu - from where else could I talk about this in response to his "worry"?) There's nothing in this forum that NYU didn't mention approve of via some NYU sponsored event first. Freedom of speech is yay. Just mentioning that the people themselves we talk about on here could one day see what we say about them so it's good to use caution (internet courage is a bad thing when you could be affected IRL).
