This is my list of the 10 games anyone who considers themselves a gamer should, at some point in time, play. Albeit, you may not like them all, but you must at least try these games out.
(I didn't include online or primarily-multiplayer games, I might make another topic for those)
10. Portal (PC,PS3, 360)
"Please note that we have added a consequence for failure. Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an 'unsatisfactory' mark on your official testing record, followed by death. Good luck!"
You've all heard "the meme". If you haven't played Portal you may not understand it, but you laugh anyway. Portal is a spinoff game set in the Half-Life universe. While having played Half-Life will give you a better understamding of the background, not having played will not degrade the experience. Portal is a game so simple, yet perfectly executed. People's biggest complaint: it was too short. Also check out the unofficial prequel - Portal Prelude.
9. Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross (SNES,DS/PS1)
"What was the start of all this? When did the cogs of fate begin to turn? Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now, from deep within the flow of time..."
One of the best JRPGs of its time, Chrono Trigger takes traditional RPG themes and throws in time travel. While the turn-based combat hasn't aged so well, it still offers a great experience. Its sequel, Chrono Cross, takes everything that made CC so good but adds 3D graphics. A favorite of most RPG fans.
8. The World Ends With You (DS)
"Zetta Slow!"
Take an emo kid, a spunky annoying girl, a shota, and a wannabe gangsta, kill them all and force them to play in a seven day game to win back their lives and you get the best RPG the DS has to offer. From a battle system that involves you controlling two characters on both screen at once, clothes shopping, and moogles (srsly), TWEWY is a truly inovative RPG from Square Enix.
7. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
"All worlds begin in darkness, and all so end. The heart is no different. Darkness sprouts within it, grows, consumes it. Such is its nature. In the end, every heart returns to the darkness whence it came. You see, darkness is the heart's true essence."
Another gem from Square. While some may consider the combination of Final Fanatsy and Disney characters in an RPG to be childish, Kingdom Hearts is executed in a supurb manner. With Final Fantasy's darker themes and Disney's whimsical charm, Kingdom Hearts is one of the best Action RPGs around. Also check out Kingdom Hearts II (PS2), Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories (PS2, GBA), Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (DS), and the upcomming Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep (PSP).
6. Bioshock (PC, PS3, 360)
"Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well."
The spiritual successor of the System Shock series, Bioshock delves into the underwater city of Rapture, after it's downfall. Using a combination of waepons and genetic modifications, called 'plasmids', You must shoot, burn, zap, and hack your way through what was once an objectivist utopia, piecing together the story of Rapture and how it fell.
5. Metal Gear Solid (PS1,GC)
"There's nothing like the feeling of slamming a long silver bullet into a well greased chamber"
The game that started the series of games known for its long, convoluted, crazy, yet perfectly orchastrated plot. Metal Gear Solid was the first game to get the perfect balance of stealth and action (don't get me started on the MSX games) allowing the player to go through the entire game with no kills other than the bosses. Speaking of bosses, the boss fights are the most memorable ones in video game history (Pshycho Mantis = ). The plot has more wtf moments than a thread on 4chan, and will keep surprising you even after the end credits (again, srsly). A note of advice: Don't play the shitty remake if you can avoid it.
4. The Legend Of Zelda; Orcarina of Time (N64)
"The flow of time is always cruel... its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it... A thing that does not change with time is a memory of younger days..."
Often hailed as one of the best games of all times, Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time follows our mute hero Link on his first 3D adventure to....save to world and the princess. Hey, I said it wa good, not original. With a huge semi-open world and gameplay that never gets boring, any gamer would be a fool to pass this game up. Protip: Don't piss off the chickens!
3. Final Fantasy VII/VIII/IX/X (PS1/PC/PS2)
"..."
It doesn't matter which, but if you have ever played video games, you must have played a 3D Final Fantasy. No other series combines stunning visuals, an immersive plot, well developed characters, customization, and emo/angsty teens (is anyone else seeing a trend with Square?) the way Final Fantasy does. Sppannig several discs, tons of hours, and usually involves riding on top of giant chickens, JRPG fans will find themselves unable to tear themselves away from these games till the end of the final cutscene. Personal recomndation: FFVIII.
2. Super Mario 64 (N64)
"Dear Mario: Please come to the castle. I've baked a cake for you."
While many argue that Super Mario Bros. was one of the "BEST GAEMZ EVAR!", nothing beats the awesomeness of Mario's first 3D adventure. Lured to the mushroom kingdom castle with promises of delicious cake, Mario finds that Peach has been captured by his foe, Bowser.....yet again. With simple controls and interesting gameplay elements, Super Mario 64 is an experience unmatched by any other Mario game.
1. Pokémon RBY/GSC/RSE/PDPt/FrLg/HgSs (GB/GBA/DS)
"Don't go into the tall grass. Wild Pokémon might attack you. It would be OK if you had your own Pokémon, but you don't."
Taking the number one spot is the RPG series that has spawned more games than any other (even Final Fantasy). I am, of course, talking about Pokémon. The main series (none of that Mystery Dungeon crap) encompases one of the most expansive games ever. While the basic idea, capturing monsters to fight other monsters, can be enjoyed by anyone, die-hard RPG fans will also be able to find a convoluted system of IVs, EVs, movesets, and and more calculators than a Calculus I class.
Beginning with a modest 151 Pokémon, the number of creatures is nearing 500. In the past 14 years since the series began, a plethora of new features have een added including: date and time, night and day, genders, wireless trading/battling, and 2.5D graphics. A number of console games have also been released ranging from awesome (Pokemon Snap, Stadium 1 & 2, Colosseum) to not so awesome (Hey You Pikachu!, Colosseum XD, Battle Revolution).
ANY person who has ever owned a gameboy (who the hell hasn't) has no excuse to have never played any of the Pokémon games. My top three: Crystal, Yellow, Emerald.
Protip: Real men always go with the fire starter.
