 Japanese Language
« Thread Started on Apr 7, 2010, 9:03pm »

Does anyone here want to learn Japanese?

I mean, I'm no expert, but since we're all on a forum dedicated to a Japanese genre I figure some of us are interested.

So I figure maybe we could make some sort of casual peer study program or beginners lessons or something.

Anyone interested?

I know enough Japanese to get by if I'm ever stranded on a deserted Japanese island. For example, I know that when I want to convey happiness, I should say "yata" or "yokata".

That said I'd still be down to learn more, just cause it's kewl.

I'd also try to incorporate some really interesting cultural stuff I'm just learning now.

Like do you know much about the three writing systems Paul? :D There's some interesting stuff on how they view alcoholism vs. drunk driving, and I can never stop talking about the subtle differences between certain genres, as well as Japanese self-identity vs "in and outgrouping" structured in the language. :3 I guess I'd have to organize different subject matter for different dates.

Oh gawd Kevin, I just tried to write a message to you in Japanese but it utterly failed. XD But I said, let's review your latest test and try hard to get a perfect score on the final!

善良さ〔栄養分〕に感謝してくだ さい! 私はとてもほっとしています! 万歳を叫んでください! はい! 何という軽減!

This is all I can say.

Oh, there are three writing systems? Is one an alphabet like what we're used to? If so that's pretty それはかわいらしいです

I know very little Japanese, probably not even enough to make a whole sentence. ^^'' I'm open to learning, though.

If anyone's interested, there's an iPhone/Android app called Human Japanese Lite that's really good for learning the alphabet. (I barely know anything about words or grammar yet, let alone sentences. わかりませんw.)

Remembering the Kanji is probably one of the most helpful books I've ever used. Its method has its limitations, but I got up to around 600 pretty well memorized before this semester went into overdrive and precluded me from devoting any significant chunk of time to studying.

That app was fantastic, I used it in conjunction with an Android app called Obenkyo and learned all of kana and numbers to perfection in less than a week. After that, the web (especially Namasensei's FUCKING Japanese lessons) was my primary resource to get down some basic grammar and vocab.

not to be a Heisig nut, but I'd strongly recommend his Remembering the Hiragana/Katakana books as well (in addition to the aforementioned app), possibly even more than the kanji one. I learned all the katakana in literally one evening, one sitting, no sweat. It's practically a miracle.
